Southern Africa Conference – Sustainable Food Security through Land Regeneration in a Changing Climate (April 2015)

Field trip

The field trip will visit  two sites in the Dowa district some 35 to 40 km from conference venue. The communities at these sites keep trees on farms mainly through Farmer Managed Natural Regeneration (FMNR), and are growing maize, groundnuts, beans in these tree based ecosystems. Participants will also see an example of a community forest area with a signed forest management plan over the  trees that have been regenerated naturally.

World Agroforestry Centre and government officers (agriculture and forestry) will guide the participants in small groups to farmers fields where the farmers will explain and respond to questions (translation will be provided). Tony Rinaudo (also known as the “tree whisperer“) and other FMNR colleagues will provide a practical demonstration of FMNR in the field during the trip also.
