The large diversity of agricultural patterns is a challenge for development planners. A farming systems approach helps to develop an understanding of the complex operating context of the farm household. It can also facilitate the efficient targeting of solutions for populations of farms with broadly similar conditions. An updated farming systems spatial characterization and classification tool has recently been developed for the Sub-Saharan African region to inform science leaders and policy makers. The approach has also been applied at the national level in Ethiopia and shows strong potential for helping plan agricultural development interventions. Come and join us in this side event to discuss the farming systems framework, Southern African farming systems as well as research and policy applications for targeting and investment planning.
